A Day Trip to Luxembourg






We took the TGV high-speed train which travels at nearly 200 miles per hour from Paris’ Gare de l’Est station. Not only can the train get you to Luxembourg City faster than a car but also it's inexpensive. Trains arrive at Central Railway Station, the Gare de Luxembourg, located walking distance to the Luxembourg City center and the Old Town.

Casemates Luxembourg. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 963, Count Siegfried built a fortified castle on the Bock Promontory, which was soon to become the cradle of the city. In the course of the centuries, on the western side, mighty ring walls were added, which, however, did not foil the Burgundians in their attempt to conquer the city in 1443. The best builder-engineers of the new masters (the Burgundians, the Spaniards, the French, the Austrians and the German Confederation) eventually turned the city into one of the most powerful emplacements in the world, the "Gibraltar of the North"...And was used as a bomb shelter for 35,000 people during World War II. This maze of underground tunnels is the longest casemate in the world.

Le Chemin De La Corniche, also called “the most beautiful balcony of Europe” (according to the Luxembourg writer Batty Weber), it runs along the Alzette valley on the ramparts - built by the Spaniards and the French in the 17th century - from the Bock Promontory up to the lower part of the Holy Ghost Citadel, the so-called “Rondellen”. We haven’t traveled much in Europe. It was very pretty and the history was fascinating but not sure it is THE most beautiful balcony of Europe.

I think many who come to Luxembourg just stay in the upper part of the city and are missing out a lot. Head down using one of the many free elevators around and you are at one of the unique places in the world. You can still walk through the medieval streets and corridors along the water and envision what life was like in those days. There are many great restaurants and cafes along the walk and several gardens and little hidden parks.

The Matara town limits seems to have changed a lot. Most noticeably there are lot of people everywhere. People seem to be very busy. It's not the small town I grew up in. They have side walks now! Yay! People don't need to share the road with vehicles any more. However, few seem to abide by the traffic rules and respect for the pedestrian is nonexistent. The most prominent landmark of Matara City are the Dutch built clock tower and the fort. I believe it was built in 1769 as marked at the entrance to the fort. This complex withstood the 2004 Tsunami that damaged and destroyed most of the old and new structures.
